World Heritage Day - 18th April

Tuesday 18th April is World Heritage Day, which is an international celebration of World Heritage Sites around the globe. The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site is one of 1,157 such Sites and together these are acknowledged as some of the most important cultural and natural heritage sites on earth.

World Heritage Sites have deep meanings for peoples and communities associated with them, and for many beyond, and embody experiences of previous generations and ways of living. Natural features also resonate with hearts and minds and may be linked with ancestral homelands or particular ecological environments.   

World Heritage Day was proposed in 1982 by ICOMOS (the International Council on Monuments and Sites) and was previously known as International Day for Monuments and Sites. It was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 1983 and each year has a different theme; this year’s is ‘Heritage Changes’ which focuses on Climate Change.

World Heritage Day is a reminder that these many and distinctive cultural and natural heritage sites are inscribed for us all and are deserving of appreciation and preservation internationally.
